How Do I Break Into the Voice Over Business?
Here’s the $99,000 answer: You need to know how to DO IT before you can even think about breaking into the business.
Being in the voiceover business for 23 years, I can’t tell you how often I have heard people say after I tell them what I do: “Voice overs? Oh, man! I can do that!” or “Everyone is always telling me I have a great voice and that I should do voice overs”.
This idea that voice overs is not a skill and that anyone can do it is one of the biggest fallacies in the business. The truth is not everyone can do it and it’s not about having a great voice. It’s about developing the skill. That’s right. Being able to meet all the requirements of auditioning for voiceovers and then actually booking the job IS A SKILL.
And you cannot teach it to yourself. All of my best students started out not really knowing how to approach a piece of voice over copy not realizing that it’s the most important aspect of voice over – that being – what you do with the copy. Copy could be a tv commercial, radio commercial, network promo or narration. Each one of these genres requires that you know how to APPROACH them and INTERPRET them. Once a student begins to master this, it’s only a matter of time before they start booking lucrative voice over jobs – which many of my former students are now doing.
At ABACUS ENTERTAINMENT, we are dedicated to teaching you how to approach and interpret voice over copy of all kinds. Learning how to do that is the first step you need to take towards breaking into the voice over business. Once you learn that skill, then we take you to the next step which is educating you about how to market yourself as a voice over artist and the tools you’ll need to accomplish that. The first tool will be your voice over demo which we will create for you right here at our state of the art recording studio. And it doesn’t stop there. We will cover every aspect of how to market yourself in the very competitive voice over world and how to start making money doing it.
I’m always happy to meet new students. Don’t hesitate to contact me. Any thoughts or questions – please feel free to respond. I look forward to hearing from you!
