Hypersonic Sound. Hyper Awesome!
The idea of hypersonic sound started “way back when…” Sony gave it a shot, but not until Woody Norris committed to the issue did it really move forward.
So What is it?
In very simple terms, imagine a speaker you can only hear if you are in front of it. Using the magic of transducers and high frequencies like 600khz (human hearing stops at about 20khz), the audio is wrapped so we can hear what we technically cannot hear. Complicated? The frequencies we can’t hear remain focused – like an audio laser, and once this hits, these frequencies are ‘unwrapped’. In Star Trek terms – this is kind of like an audio transporter – way cool!
What’s more important than (slightly confusing) explanations is how this is changing our living, breathing world. Yes, of course it’s being used for military applications – heck if we could weaponize applesauce we would. But when it comes to commercial application, hypersonic sound is really coming into its own. You’ll find yourself walking by a soda machine which talks to you once you’ve reached a specific location – opening up a myriad of possibilities into commonplace tech applications. Soon, this will all be as ‘normal’ as ice cubes…
