So you’ve been working the P2P sites. Knocking out those auditions, sometimes seven or ten in a stretch. Corporate video, e-learning, commercials, web videos, you name it. Self direct, playback, try it again, playback, a couple times more, send it. That’s the drill. And you’re still feeling like the reads weren’t quite what you want them to be. You could spend the next four hours editing and micromanaging the read until it sounds perfect but by the time you do that you’ve already drained all the spontaneity out of it until it literally sounds “fixed”. Getting that comfortable, fresh sounding read every time you audition can be daunting.
Being in your home studio by yourself for sometimes hours at a time, recording one audition after another is no easy task. We all love what we do but sometimes it can be a grind simply because you’re on your own and you’re not getting any feedback. Any intelligent person knows that you can only shoot in the dark for so long. Outside perspective is always helpful and can sometimes unlock that spontaneous sounding read you’ve been trying to get for the last hour but seems to be eluding you. In other words: You’re in your head and you can’t seem to get out of it.
Like a good personal trainer who helps people achieve their fitness goals, calling up the assistance of a VO coach to offer some suggestions and outside perspective might be worth the small amount you would pay for them to help you score that $5000 gig that you’ve been trying to nail all night. They might even get you to nail it in 15 minutes! Then you can move on to the next one. We all strive to be able to self direct. That’s a must in this industry. But sometimes having that trusted, expert point you in a direction that you hadn’t thought of yet could make all the difference. Instead of shooting in the dark, get a good coach to shed some light.
